“Materially Untrue: Stories About Objects Unearthed from Art Storage,” a collaboration with the Dallas Museum of Art, February 21, 2014.
Partly inspired by Significant Objects (co-founded by Joshua Glenn & Rob Walker), this Dallas Museum of Art collaboration began with four commissioned pieces — “original stories about objects unearthed from art storage” at the museum, by:
- Will Clarke (author of Lord Vishnu’s Love Handles and The Worthy)
- Doug Dorst (author of S. (with JJ Abrams) and The Surf Guru — not to mention the top-selling story/object from the original S.O. experiment)
- Merritt Tierce (National Book Foundation “5 Under 35” honoree)
- Shay Youngblood (DMA writer-in-residence; author of Hotel Stories, Big Mama Stories, and Black Girl in Paris)
The second half of the event presented the results of an open call for stories to the Dallas-area writing community. From dozens and dozens of entries, five winners were selected to read their inventive tales, also inspired by works from the museum’s collection that are currently in storage: Julie Bowman, Tisha Gilreath, David Haynes, Clay Reynolds, and Melody Townsel. The evening concluded with an “audience choice” award (determined by applause), won by Townsel.
Significant Objects co-founder Rob Walker served as host and co-organizer. The event was part of DMA’s Arts & Letters Live series, and took place in the museum’s Horchow Auditorium — which was packed.
